Prison for father of injured child: probation for mother
In the trial concerning the abuse of a six-month-old boy, the Frankenthal District Court has sentenced the father to five years in prison. This was announced by a court spokeswoman on Tuesday. The mother received a two-year suspended sentence, during which she had to complete 200 hours of community service.
The judges considered it proven that the now 39-year-old had abused the infant, it said. The child was taken to hospital in July 2020 with life-threatening injuries to the abdomen and head and underwent emergency surgery.
The mother must have suspected the abuse in Speyer, but did nothing - however, the now 32-year-old made the emergency call, which was taken into account in her favor when sentencing, it was said. The verdicts are not yet final.
The regional court in the Palatinate largely followed the prosecution's demand. The prosecution had argued for a prison sentence of between four and five years for the father and a suspended sentence for the mother. The parents' lawyers, on the other hand, had pleaded for acquittal.
The conviction for the father's actions involves a five-year prison sentence, as his processes in court led to a conviction for abusing the child. Despite her inaction when she suspected abuse, the mother was given a more lenient sentence of two years probation and 200 hours of community service, as her prompt call for emergency services was considered in her favor during judgments.
