European Football Championship - Prime Minister Weil: The European Championship reminds me of the 2006 summer fairytale

Lower Saxony's Minister-President Stephan Weil sees the UEFA European Championship as a long-awaited mood swing. "I believe we all wished for the EM to provide something like a relief after so many bad news in the world," the SPD politician told the German Press Agency. "So far, the course of the European Championship has been really good. There is a huge excitement, there is a pronounced readiness to celebrate peacefully and together with many other nations. It reminds me very much of the Summer Fairy Tale of 2006." Back then, Germany hosted the Football World Cup.

In the EM quarter-final against Spain on Friday, Weil sees the German national team facing a big challenge. "That's almost like a pre-final," said the head of government. "Spain is probably the toughest nut we could have gotten in the quarter-finals. If we pass this test, then all doors are open."

What he likes about the German team is the balanced squad, Weil added. National coach Julian Nagelsmann always has new options, the Hannover 96 fan and politician continued. "Niclas Füllkrug is the man for the decisive situations," said the politician. "He has proven that often enough."
