Upcoming Elections in Thuringia and Saxony - Prime Minister Weil Distances Herself from SPD's Assertions
The regional leader of Lower Saxony and SPD chairman, Stephan Weil, after seeing the predicted outcomes for the elections in Saxony and Thuringia, has urged the national party to respond. According to him, in a statement released by the SPD in Lower Saxony, the outcome is "obviously" not in line with the SPD's claim as a nationwide people's party across Germany.
"Much like after the European elections, the federal party is now faced with the pressing question of how to regain the support of the citizens with its policies, only a year before the federal elections," said Weil. The SPD now needs to "completely focus on the state elections in Brandenburg in three weeks, where Dietmar Woidke, a seasoned and highly regarded Minister President, is vying for the SPD," Weil added.
However, following that, "the preparations for the federal elections in a year begin, and with it the inevitable task for the SPD to drastically enhance its chances of success by then."
As of now, the SPD in Thuringia is hovering around 6.1 to 6.4 percent, still lower than its worst-ever result in Thuringia in 2019 (8.2). In Saxony, the SPD is projected to reach 7.5 to 7.8 percent (2019: 7.7).
"Given the current situation in Thuringia and Saxony, the SPD's performance in the upcoming Election to the Landtag in these regions may be critical for its standing in the nationwide political landscape."
"These unfavorable outcomes in the recent elections could potentially impact the SPD's strategy for the Election to the Landtag in Lower Saxony, which is also scheduled soon."
