Distinguished patronage - Prime Minister Ramelow rejoices with his godchildren.

In Germany, Thuringia's Prime Minister, Bodo Ramelow, has an impressive track record as a godfather - with 133 godchildren under his belt. He became known as a godfather when he took on the role of Minister President, as the position is linked to being a godparent for children from large families. This weekend, Ramelow organized a festival for them in Schönewald, Unstrut-Hainich District. The event marked the 10th edition of this gathering where children enjoyed activities, coffee, and cake.

This unique idea was first introduced by the previous Prime Minister, Dieter Althaus (CDU), in 2003. Since the last meeting in 2022, Ramelow assumed the godparenthood of 44 more children. Before the festival, Ramelow expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "Being a godfather is something very special, especially for large families who may face a range of challenges." He further added, "We want to acknowledge these families who have chosen to have more than one child, and this occasion is a chance to express our gratitude for their commitment."

The tradition of Thuringian state leaders taking on godparenthood continuation from the sixth child is a significant one. Godparenthood is possible when there are multiple births, such as triplets. The role comes with a monetary gift and lasts until the children turn six years old.
