Architecture - Pretzien weir to become Unesco World Heritage Site
The Pretzien weir near Schönebeck is to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site according to the Conference of Culture Ministers. The weir has been included as one of seven new sites on a list of proposals, the State Chancellery announced on Monday. The KMK had agreed on the seven new potential World Heritage Sites at a special meeting on Monday in order to place them on the so-called Tentative List, which will be submitted to Unesco next year.
In addition to the Pretzien weir, the television tower in Stuttgart and the Olympic Park in Munich were also added to the list. The Francke Foundations in Halle from Saxony-Anhalt have been on the list for some time now
Minister of Culture and State Rainer Robra congratulated them on this success. The Pretzien weir has reliably protected the population in crisis situations to this day, said Robra. The weir, located south of Magdeburg near Schönebeck, was built between 1871 and 1875 and still helps to regulate the water level of the Elbe today.
The "Green Belt" is also included on the list as a candidate for the title of World Heritage Site. It has areas in the states of Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt, Bavaria, Brandenburg, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Saxony.
The tentative list will be submitted to Unesco on February 1, 2024.
