Fire department operation - Presumably burning cigarette causes fire

A cigarette that was presumably still burning caused the fire in an apartment in Hamburg-Winterhude. "The investigation is still ongoing. At the moment, however, there are many indications that a cigarette that was not properly disposed of on the balcony could have caused the fire," the police said on Monday in response to a dpa inquiry.

Two firefighters were injured during the firefighting operation on Saturday morning. A 36-year-old suffered smoke inhalation and second-degree burns, a 55-year-old colleague was slightly injured. Both have since been discharged from hospital.

The firefighting team had entered the rubbish-strewn apartment because two people were thought to be inside. In fact, no one was inside. At times, more than 100 firefighters were deployed.

The fire in Hamburg-Winterhude was reportedly triggered by a carelessly discarded cigarette. Despite initial reports of people being trapped in the apartment, the fire department discovered that it was empty. During the operation, two firefighters suffered injuries, one from smoke inhalation and burns, and another with minor injuries. The Hamburg police are investigating the incident, suggesting that the cigarette was a likely cause of the emergency.
