Presidential election in Iran has begun
The ultra-conservative Council has approved six candidates, among them only one reformer. However, only four candidates remain in the race, as two ultra-conservative candidates have withdrawn their applications.
In May, the previous President Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash. The election, originally scheduled for 2025, had to be brought forward as a result. The upcoming election takes place in turbulent times: The escalating Middle East conflict has heightened tensions in the region, and the country is struggling with the economic consequences of international sanctions.
Despite the early election due to the previous President's unfortunate death, Iran continues its presidential election process. At the polling station, television networks will cover the voting, showcasing the public's choice between the four remaining candidates, including the sole reformer approved by the Council.
