President of the state parliament: anti-Semitism endangers democracy
State Parliament President Muhterem Aras (Greens) has called on society to take a stand against hatred of Jews. "Again and again, we must make it unmistakably clear: We will not tolerate anti-Semitism," said Aras in the state parliament in Stuttgart on Thursday. The developments of recent weeks must be taken seriously, she warned. History teaches us that extremists should not be underestimated. "Anyone who disregards fundamental rights and freedoms, who allows Jews to be excluded from them, who celebrates, trivializes or practices anti-Semitism, is endangering our democracy," said Aras.
On Thursday, to mark the 85th anniversary of the Nazi pogrom night of 1938, the state parliament debated the report by the state government's anti-Semitism commissioner in plenary session. Synagogues and Jewish stores in Germany were set on fire and destroyed on Pogrom Night 85 years ago. It marked the beginning of the organized persecution of Jews under National Socialism.
The state parliament's debate on Thursday, triggered by the 85th anniversary of the Nazi pogrom night, highlighted the continuous need for society to confront conflicts related to anti-Semitism. As Parliament President Muhterem Aras emphasized, the history of such conflicts serves as a reminder that ignoring anti-Semitic behaviors can pose a significant threat to democracy.
