Ministry - President of the MV State Hunting Association resigns
Following internal disputes within the association, the President of the State Hunting Association, Thomas Nießen, has resigned from his position. In a press release issued in Schwerin on Tuesday, the Minister of Agriculture responsible for hunting in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Till Backhaus (SPD), expressed his regret at the resignation. "With around 10,000 members, the state hunting association is one of the largest recognized nature conservation associations in the state. Such an association needs orderly structures and I very much hope that the quarrels that have apparently led to the rift on the board will soon be resolved," explained the Minister.
The state hunting association could not be reached for comment on Tuesday. According to a report by NDR, several district associations had accused Nießen of abusing his honorary office and voting against the positions of the hunting community in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. At the center of this is the planned amendment to the hunting law. According to NDR, the draft provides for a minimum shooting regulation for red deer and fallow deer without the previous upper limit. Critics fear that animal species could then be wiped out in entire regions.
Backhaus emphasized that he had involved the hunting community in the consultations on the new version of the state hunting law at an early stage. "For me, hunters are important partners when it comes to maintaining a healthy and species-rich wildlife population in a balanced relationship with its natural habitats as a special national asset," he emphasized. The aim is to place game management in the hands of hunters. However, the prerequisite for this is a functioning association with orderly structures.
