Many respiratory infections - Prescriptions since the beginning of the year at a high level

In the first half of 2024, many people in Germany were absent from work due to illness. The sick leave rate of KKH - Kaufmannskrankenkasse members was 6.5 percent in the first six months. In the first half of 2019, which was before the pandemic, it was 5.0 percent.

Employees were absent on average twice during the first half of 2023, with 204 absences per 100 employed members of this health insurance. From January to the end of June 2024, there were even 210 absences per 100 members.

Employees were absent with respiratory symptoms

According to the insurance, the main reason for this is the persistently high number of respiratory infections such as cough, common cold, or influenza-like illnesses: This number was 70 cases per 100 insured persons in the first half of 2024 - compared to 69 cases in the previous year and only 34 cases five years ago. Respiratory infections accounted for one third of all illness cases from January to the end of June 2024 (34 percent).

According to a spokesperson for the KKH, there are several reasons for the increase. The sensitivity for the infection risk of respiratory diseases may be greater since the Corona pandemic, possibly because more people stayed home due to this reason. Sick notes for a few days have been better recorded since the introduction of electronic sick notes. Previously, the insurances had not been informed about all cases.

  1. Despite the increase in sick leave, employees at KKH were still required to present a medical certificate before returning to work following a period of absence due to a Respiranory infection.
  2. Considering the high number of Respiratory infections in Hannover, Germany, many individuals sought medical attention, leading to a surge in the demand for medical certificates.
  3. As a responsible employer, KKH encouraged its employees to prioritize their health and take adequate time off work when suffering from a Respiratory infection, ensuring they obtained a medical certificate before returning.
  4. In light of the high prevalence of Respiratory infections in Germany, it is crucial for individuals to follow public health guidelines and take preventative measures to protect themselves and their colleagues, promoting a healthier work environment.
