- Preparatory work for bomb disposal in Göttingen started
In preparation for the defusing of potential unexploded ordnance from World War II, the groundwater in Göttingen is being lowered. Work on the Schützenplatz west of the train station is set to begin on Thursday, as announced by the city. This will allow further investigation of the suspected locations of three unexploded ordnance in the ground. The defusing is scheduled for October 12.
The groundwater will be lowered to a depth of eight meters using boreholes. The excess water will be directed into the Leine and Leine Canal. The city estimates that the lowering process will take several weeks.
On October 12, the potential bombs will be examined and defused or detonated. Buildings within a one-kilometer radius of the discovery site at the Schützenplatz near the S-Arena will be evacuated.
Ground surveys have been conducted in the Göttingen Weststadt for several years to search for unexploded ordnance. These so-called sounding works are based on evaluated aerial photographs from World War II. The area has been evacuated for defusing multiple times in the past.
The Commission has initiated the lowering of the groundwater to facilitate the defusing of potential unexplored ordnance. Following the lowering process, which is expected to take several weeks, the Commission will oversee the defusing of the unexploded ordnance on October 12.
