Bundesliga promoter VfL Potsdam faces HC Empor Rostock, a third-tier team, in the first round of the German Handball Cup. This was determined by the draw on Thursday. The eleven first-round matches will be played on August 24 and 25. Last year, the Brandenburgers, with their then coach Bob Hanning, failed in the second round of the Cup.

The eleven winning teams qualify for the next round in early October, during which the second-place teams in the Bundesliga, such as Vizemeister Füchse Berlin, participate. Only the top three teams from the previous round - winners SC Magdeburg, finalists MT Melsungen, and SG Flensburg-Handewitt - bypass this round and start in the round of 16 in mid-November.
