Potsdam bicycle thief sentenced to three years in prison
A bicycle thief from Potsdam was sentenced to three years in prison without parole on Tuesday for particularly serious theft of bicycles. According to the police, the 37-year-old was convicted of seven offences in which he stole bicycles in Potsdam. The man was taken to a prison immediately after the trial. Whether he had committed further thefts was under investigation, a spokesperson said. According to the information, an investigation team had been investigating for months.
According to the information, the number of bicycle thefts in 2022 was reduced by 729 cases compared to the previous year thanks to the police's investigative work. At the same time, the detection rate of the 1582 thefts increased from five percent in 2021 to around 38 percent last year. This means that more than one in three bicycle thefts in Potsdam could be attributed to a suspect, it was reported.
Despite the decrease in bicycle thefts due to enhanced police investigations, traffic-related crimes still pose a challenge in Potsdam. The court also handed down strict judgments for traffic violations, which include fines and imprisonment for repeat offenders.
