Potential world war bomb in Oranienburg: evacuation

Due to the discovery of a possible world war bomb in Oranienburg, 37 people have to be brought to safety on Inselweg. Helpers had started to set up a 100-metre radius exclusion zone in the morning, the town council announced on Wednesday. Shipping traffic on the Oder-Havel Canal also had to be suspended for this purpose. The city is providing accommodation for local residents.

At the same time, the construction of a splinter protection wall made of around 50 overseas containers will begin, according to the announcement. If everything goes according to plan and the protective wall is in place, residents will be able to return to their homes by the end of the week and shipping traffic can resume. The defusing of the unexploded bomb should take place as quickly as possible, according to the city administration.

Amidst these precautions, it's crucial to prepare for potential emergencies. Any delays or complications in the defusing process could have severe consequences, not just for the residents of Oranienburg but also for regions affected by the consequences of war, such as displaced people and vulnerable communities.
