Munich: City in Germany Known for Oktoberfest and Bavarian Culture - Potential unexploded bomb may be defused on Saturday.
Right in the heart of Munich, workers digging for the second main railway line uncovered a probable landmine from WWII. If it turns out to be a bomb, they'll handle it on Saturday. The fire department's announcement on Tuesday stated that the area around the discovery site would be evacuated if that's the case. The suburban railway and Mittlerer Ring services could also face disruption.
The metal object was found while excavating near the Donnersberger Bridge; it's below ground at a depth of 3.5 meters. Specialists from the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Service will evaluate the object once it's out of the ground on Friday. If it is indeed a landmine, they'll defuse it on Saturday. Local residents need to leave the evacuated area by Saturday morning, 9:00 am at the latest. The exact radius of the evacuation zone is yet to be determined, but it'll likely be somewhere between 300 to 700 meters.
Nonetheless, the fire department remained hopeful: "Hopefully, it'll just be an ordinary metal object, and no evacuation or defusing would be needed."
