Urgent Situations - Potential bomb discoveries lead to evacuations in Göttingen in October.
Again, many in Göttingen are forced to leave their homes because of possible bomb discoveries from World War II. In the western part of the city close to the train station, authorities revealed on Tuesday that three presumed unexploded ordnances will be examined, defused or blown up. Areas within a distance of approximately one kilometer around the Schützenplatz at the S-Arena must be cleared out on October 12th.
For quite a while now, soil investigations have been conducted in the Göttingen Weststadt in search of unexploded munitions. These investigations, known as "probing works," are based on analyzing wartime aerial images. This area has been evacuated on multiple occasions for defusing.
Currently, all three potential bomb sites are covered with containers filled with water. As they prepare for the specific evaluation in October, there are no present restrictions - like at the S-Arena. This hall serves as the home stadium for basketball Bundesliga team BG Göttingen.
"The situation here is quite complex,” said Christian Schmetz, the Ordering Officer. Aspects that need to be resolved include the handling of underground cables. It remains to be seen if these cables need to be moved.
