Posterstein Castle: Reconstruction of the north wing begins

According to the authorities, it is the largest construction project at the castle in 300 years: The north wing of Posterstein Castle in Altenburger Land, which was demolished around 70 years ago, is to be rebuilt. The foundation stone was laid on Thursday, according to the district administration. Around four million euros have been budgeted for the project. The state is funding the shell construction with around 1.5 million euros. Construction began in July of this year.

Only the ruined foundation walls of the wing have been standing for a long time. The north wing, completed in 1724, was torn down in 1951 in order to use the stones and more as building material for other purposes - the manor to which the castle belonged was expropriated in 1946 as part of the land reform.

The reconstruction of the wing will be based on the historical model, it was said. There will be space for exhibitions and events, but there will also be space for storage.

The main building of the castle, which is more than 800 years old, houses a museum with exhibitions on the cultural history of the region. There are also special exhibitions and special offers for children. One thematic focus in the rebuilt north wing will be the European salon culture of earlier times, according to the museum website. Put simply, salons were meetings for cultural exchange, for example with music or readings.

During the reconstruction process, various historical monuments from the north wing will be restored. The new north wing, once completed, will not only serve as a storage area but will also house exhibitions and events, contributing to the cultural richness of the building.
