Security - Positive outcome of weapons ban checks at the main railway station
The Federal Police have given an initial positive assessment of their checks to ensure compliance with the weapons ban at Hamburg Central Station. Since the ban came into force at the beginning of October, 66 knives and 20 other weapons such as irritant gas, alarm guns, stun guns and telescopic batons have already been found during three special operations, said the President of the responsible Federal Police Directorate in Hanover, Michael Schuol, in Hamburg on Monday. "Every object is one too many."
200 additional officers have been deployed at and around the station since the beginning of October. "Since then, we have made 800 identity checks, searched 500 people and initiated more than 20 investigations," said Schuol.
Even before the start of the permanent weapons ban at the main station, the Federal Police had reportedly increased its forces in Hamburg. This year, 3000 additional officers have increased their presence in the S-Bahn trains. "We set out to significantly increase our presence on trains and at stations, and we have already achieved this," said Schuol.
Since April, joint "Quattro patrols" from the federal and state police as well as DB Sicherheit and Hochbahn-Wache have been on the move as part of the "Secure Central Station Alliance". With more than half a million people a day, Hamburg Central Station is the second busiest station in Europe - and a hotspot for crime.
According to Schuol, the number of cases of resistance to police action is also increasing. "We have reached a record number of injured colleagues this year." 66 federal police officers were injured in Hamburg, 16 of them at the main station alone. Overall, there is a decreasing inhibition threshold for acts of violence - especially under the influence of alcohol.
1800 administrative orders have already been issued this year at the instigation of the Federal Police - mostly bans from the premises or house bans, but also 37 so-called transportation exclusions. "In our view, these people have forfeited their right to travel," said Schuol.
"If they want to be successful, they have to carry out regular checks," he summarized. That's why the last focus operation last weekend was "another milestone in improving the overall situation at and around the station".
From Saturday evening (6 p.m.) to Sunday morning (2 a.m.), the Federal Police, with an additional team of one hundred officers, carried out checks on entire S-Bahn trains at the main station. A total of nine prohibited items were discovered, including one-handed knives, a knuckleduster and a stun gun, said Jan Müller, head of the Hamburg Federal Police Inspectorate, who led the operation.
The identities of 315 people had been established, 315 people had been searched and 96 people had been sent off. In addition, there were 14 wanted persons among those checked. Three people were arrested.
According to Müller, violations of the weapons ban were mainly found late at night. While there were no finds at the beginning of the checks, these increased as time went on. "There were more in the evening and then even more at night," he said. "We made the findings with the party people who went out to celebrate in the evening."
