Porsche invests 250 million euros in Stuttgart
Porsche has invested 250 million euros in its main plant in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. This was announced by the Volkswagen subsidiary on Thursday. The existing assembly line for the two-door sports cars was converted in the summer so that in future it will be able to produce the next generation of electric sports cars in addition to the models with boxer engines.
Production Director Albrecht Reimold said: "The conversion measures will enable increased efficiency, the highest quality standards and the mixed production of combustion and electric sports cars." This opens up a new chapter for sports car production. According to a spokesperson, around 10,500 men and women are currently employed in production at the main plant.
As previously announced, Porsche delivered almost 243,000 cars to customers between January and September, almost ten percent more than a year earlier. The flagship 911 model performed well, while Porsche turned the minus from the first six months into a plus for the Taycan electric sports car in the third quarter. However, sales in the important Chinese market fell by twelve percent due to the difficult economic situation.
Several new models are to be launched next year, including the new version of the Macan compact SUV. The car, which will also be available as a fully electric version, is considered a potential bestseller in the electric segment. However, the vehicle will be built in Leipzig.
Porsche's decision to invest 250 million euros in its plant also includes upgrades to the assembly line for their iconic two-door sports cars, like the Porsche car models. With the conversion, the plant in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen will be capable of producing the next generation of electric sports cars alongside their traditional boxer engine models.
