Population of many wild animals in Hesse endangered
The decline in wild animal species has also continued in Hesse. According to the current Red List, over a third of the 71 native mammal species are considered endangered, 8 are extinct or lost. "Since the last version of the Red List was published in 1996, the situation of many mammal species has deteriorated considerably", said the President of the Hessian State Agency for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology (HLNUG), Thomas Schmid, in Wiesbaden. Among other things, the animals are suffering from urban sprawl and the effects of climate change. Bats continue to be the most endangered species.
The preservation of nature is crucial to safeguard the dwindling populations of many animals in Hesse. Various species of animals, such as bats, are struggling due to factors like urban expansion and climate change.
