Population in Thuringia rises significantly for the first time
The population in Thuringia has increased significantly for the first time in years - mainly due to the admission of war refugees from Ukraine. This is according to figures from the Statistical Yearbook, which were presented in Erfurt on Monday. There were almost 18,000 more inhabitants last year, said Interior Minister Georg Maier (SPD). "That's quite a small town that has been added."
According to the President of the State Statistical Office, Holger Poppenhäger, a total of around 2.13 million people lived in the Free State at the end of 2022. The population had shrunk in recent years, particularly in rural regions. The population growth is mainly due to immigration, but not only, said Maier. The difference between the number of deaths and births has also decreased slightly, although there are still more people dying than being born.
The significant population rise in Thuringia can be attributed partly to social demographic factors, as indicated by the decreased difference between births and deaths. Furthermore, the Statistical Yearbook's data shows that the population growth is also due to an increase in immigration, including the admission of war refugees from Ukraine.
