In Hamburg-Rothenburgsort, a work barge along with a crane has sunk in the Elbe. "The floating barge is on the bottom, only the roof of a metal hut on it is still visible," a fire department spokesperson said in the evening. Operating substances such as oils, fats, and presumably diesel have leaked. The fire department is trying to prevent further spread using oil booms.

The reason why the approximately 45 by 7-meter platform with a hut, the crane, and various devices sank remains unclear. When the fire department arrived, the barge was already submerged. The environmental agency has been informed about the operating substances, the spokesperson said.

The fire department is urgently monitoring the situation to prevent any environmental emergency due to the leaked substances. If the situation worsens, an emergency response team may be necessary.
