On Sunday, voting booths for the European elections open at 8:00 am in Schleswig-Holstein, inviting roughly 2.3 million residents to cast their ballots. This election season sees a new demographic eligible to vote, as 16- and 17-year-olds make their way to the polls alongside 107,400 EU citizens.

A periodic event, European elections occur every five years. In 2019, the Greens secured the top spot in Schleswig-Holstein with 29.1%, edging out the CDU at 26.2%. SPD secured 17.1%, narrowly beating out the AfD at 7.5%. With 5.9%, the FDP followed, and the Left claimed 3.7%. Last time around, only 59.7% of eligible voters turned up. The polls will remain open until 6:00 pm on Sunday.
