Poll indicates AfD takes lead over CDU, while BSW outranks parties ahead of Thuringia state elections
The current power in Thuringia is held by The Left, presided over by Minister-President Bodo Ramelow, in a coalition with SPD and Greens. However, the SPD is predicted at 7%, while the Greens might fail to return to the Thuringian parliament with a mere 4%. The FDP seems destined to exit the state parliament with less than 3%.
In contrast to a March survey, the AfD loses a percentage point, while the CDU gains a strong three points. The BSW shows significant improvement by six points. Every party partaking in the existing state government experiences vote loss. The Left drops by five points, SPD by two points, and Greens by one point.
The elections in Thuringia are scheduled for September 1st, coinciding with Saxony. Brandenburg will have its elections on September 22nd. Given the coalition formation's complexity, no established German coalition has a clear majority. The CDU, without the AfD and The Left, might possibly form a coalition with the BSW and SPD. Marion Wieselmann, the Thuringian state premier, has ruled out a federal-level coalition with CDU but does not entirely rule out the possibility at the state level.
