Political standoff: SPD, the left-wing party, applies pressure on Scholz; Lindner advocates for budget cuts.

Budget Approval Date Set for July 3rd Amidst Budget Deficit Debate

With a projected budget deficit of roughly 25 billion Euro, Finance Minister Lindner is advocating for substantial budget reductions in various ministries, particularly the Social Ministry. SPD leader Saskia Esken has slammed Lindner's insistence on austerity measures as a "grave mistake," arguing they hinder the nation's progress.

The SPD-Left faction's membership initiative, as reported by the AFP over the weekend and previously mentioned by "Spiegel," carries the title "Preserve Our Democracy, Secure Our Future!"

The initiative's implementation, in accordance with the SPD organizational regulations, necessitates the support of at least one percent of party members from ten districts in three federal states. The initiative becomes official upon securing the backing of 20 percent of members within three months, triggering a response from the executive board.

The initiative's text includes a provision stating that the budgets of the concerned ministries should not be reduced compared to the previous year. Instead, the proposers are insisting on "enhanced funding in these sectors, plus substantial investments in affordable housing, eco-friendly infrastructure, strong municipalities, and vigorous climate protection."

The paper warns that reductions would amount to an "economic, ecological, and democratic dead end" and encourages the party to only accept a federal budget under these terms.

Lindner, who also dismisses calls from coalition partners for a loosening of the debt constraint, reiterated his stance in the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" over the weekend. He emphasized that economic growth is necessary before resources can be distributed.

For Lindner, it's not just about the budget plan for the upcoming year, but a broader shift in our economy. "There can be no compromise on social issues - quite the contrary," stated the Minister. "We have increased social benefits by 13 billion Euro since 2022."

The FDP also condemned the SPD-Left's membership initiative. Jens Teutrine, the spokesperson for the Young Group of the Bundestag faction, told the "Tagesspiegel" that anyone aiming to eliminate, disable, or weaken the debt brake must secure a majority beyond the FDP. Teutrine described the SPD-Left's initiative as a "juvenile power play" that undermines Olaf Scholz and the Federal Government.
