Honorary positions - Political parties call for increased access to digital resources for local politicians.
To ease the burden on voluntary municipal politicians in Saxony-Anhalt, parties are pushing for measures like hybrid meetings. Digital collaborations, including virtual or hybrid meetings and digital voting, can help balance voluntary work, jobs, and personal life more effectively. FDP state chairwoman Lydia Hüskens believes that it's time to bid farewell to the paper age in local parliaments and administrations.
The FDP had further remarks about the significant time commitment required for municipal duties. Therefore, AfD's State Office emphasizes the need for urgent deregulation and speeding up political processes to maintain efficient democracy and the state. Greens' state chairperson Madeleine Link stresses the need to promote diversity among municipal politicians by enhancing the compatibility of volunteer work with private and professional life. The Left Party agrees, and according to them, single parents, women, and shift workers are still underrepresented. They suggest drawing inspiration from experiences during the pandemic. Local governments should make individual decisions on these matters.
In April, the state parliament adopted an amendment to the Municipal Constitution Law. This amendment allows municipal councils to organize hybrid meetings, even if it's not during exceptional situations like pandemics. This change enables individuals who look after elderly relatives or children or have jobs to participate in meetings via video conference, which is a step towards enhancing compatibility, according to the CDU in Saxony-Anhalt. Although there have been improvements, CDU also reckons that more adjustments need to be made, like setting specific meeting end times to make the work more manageable.
