- Political groups choose to implement student representative bodies.
Students in Lower Saxony are about to establish democratic class committees. This decision was made in the state legislature by the major coalitions of the SPD and Greens. The conservative and far-right factions of the CDU and AfD voted against it.
Environment Minister Julia Willie Hamburg (Greens) stated, "Democracy is something that one can never start learning at an excessive age." Lena Nzume (Greens) stressed, "Democracy is a living organism that only flourishes when everyone contributes to its nurturing, particularly young individuals like students."
As per the SPD's state parliament faction, future school forms ranging from first grade in Lower Saxony will incorporate class committees as a democratic platform. The intention behind this move is to empower students to contribute to shaping their school day and gain a basic understanding of democratic procedures.
Karl-Ludwig von Danwitz (CDU) voiced his opposition to a mandatory implementation and argued that there already exists an option for setting up class committees. "The motion's demands unnecessarily consume valuable and scarce teaching hours," complained AfD education politician Harm Rykena.
The incorporation of class committees as a democratic platform in future schools is aimed at giving students a fundamental education in democratic procedures. Julia Willie Hamburg further emphasizes that the learning of democracy is not bound by age, highlighting that it's never too late to start.
