In the "Bicycle Gate Case," which involves the illicit resale of confiscated bicycles within the Leipzig Police Department, the accused officer asserts her innocence. She claims she didn't personally profit from the situation and never kept any money for herself or enriched herself personally, her lawyer stated on Tuesday. However, the suspended Police Chief Major must face trial at the Leipzig Regional Court for charges of theft, bribery, and forgery as the previous manager of the evidence room.

The Public Prosecutor alleges that between August 2014 and November 2018, she distributed at least 265 high-priced bicycles, mainly to fellow officers, including those from the Special Operations Unit and the State Criminal Police Office. In total, she is accused of earning 4,795 euros and keeping at least 3,000 euros for herself. The bicycles were primarily stolen before being recovered by the police. The original owners and their insurance companies had already settled these cases, and therefore, they no longer desired the bikes, which were either set to be disposed of or donated to a charitable organization.

The indictment indicates that she donated the funds she obtained to a charitable organization. Specifically, the money was funneled to a horticultural association within the Leipzig district, with the defendant's father serving as the organization's chairperson. The accused stated, "I have disclosed everything and consistently informed my superiors." This claim was refuted by her former superior on Tuesday. He maintained he wasn't aware of the defendant receiving money directly and would've prohibited it if he had known. Additional investigations were conducted into the officer, yet they were ultimately halted.

When asked by the court whether she ever thought she, as a police officer, was handling and distributing money, the defendant responded, "I informed my superiors about this. It was indicated that this was not punishable." The trial is slated to resume on June 11. The Regional Court has arranged for several dates stretching through the end of October.
