Crime - Police warn of scam: bail for child run over by car
The Brandenburg police have warned of a new scam involving telephone calls demanding bail. An unknown person called a woman in the Letschin district of Steintoch in the Märkisch-Oderland district on Saturday and said that her son had run over a child and was in prison - therefore a bail of 20,000 euros was necessary to release the son from prison, the police reported on Sunday. The son was called immediately and the scam was recognized.
In the district of Oberhavel, nine citizens contacted the police on Friday. They reported fraudulent calls in which a man with a suppressed telephone number claimed to be a member of the Oranienburg police station. The man demanded bail, which had to be handed over because family members had hit and seriously injured a child and had been arrested. According to the police, no money was handed over in these cases. They asked those affected to get in touch and pointed out that officers do not demand money over the phone.

- Unfortunately, some people in Märkisch-Oderland fell victim to this scam last Saturday, with a woman being targeted in the Letschin district.
- Fortunately, the woman in Märkisch-Oderland and the nine individuals in Oberhavel did not hand over any money after recognizing the scam, as instructed by the police.
- Residents of both districts are urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious calls to the police to prevent further instances of this scam, which is a form of criminality that exploits people's emotions.
