Police Warning After Incident in Rhein-Lahn District - Beware of Fraudulent Tradesmen Known as "Roof Sharks"
Following an incident in the Rhein-Lahn district, the police are warning of fraudulent tradesmen - so-called "roof sharks". Two men posed as roofers and rang the doorbell of a 43-year-old woman in Nassau on Wednesday afternoon, as reported by the police on Friday.
They persuaded the woman to replace her guttering. Their offer: only pay for the materials, not the labor. "After completing the suspicious work, the perpetrators demanded an exorbitant sum of €3,500 from the woman," the police explained.
Cash demand reveals the scam
Since the men insisted on cash only, the woman suspected a fraud and called the police. The officers arrested the men on the spot. An investigation has been initiated against them on suspicion of attempted fraud, tax evasion, and illegal work. The police warned of fraudulent tradesmen who often target elderly people, convincing them of supposedly urgent repair work and demanding high upfront payments. The work done is usually shoddy. To prevent such fraud cases, the police advise only hiring tradesmen who you have personally hired or who have been announced by your housing administration.
