Police warn of fraud with false job offers
The police in Upper Franconia have warned against scams involving false job offers. People who accept the offers often become perpetrators themselves, the police said on Friday.
A 22-year-old from Coburg fell victim to such a scam in mid-September. She came across a job advertisement on social media that asked her to test apps for 520 euros. After successfully applying, she was given the task of testing a banking app via WhatsApp. She opened accounts with the bank for this purpose. The fraudsters used these accounts to launder money. The 22-year-old thus involuntarily became an accomplice - and the Coburg criminal investigation department has to investigate her.
In another scam, "packers" are sought via job advertisements. When signing the employment contract, applicants have to provide a copy of their identity card, their tax number or insurance numbers, for example. The victims receive high-quality goods by parcel to their home and are supposed to repackage and send the contents - usually abroad. However, according to the police, the fraudsters order the items in their victim's name, which means they receive the high bills. In addition, the actual victims can be charged with fraud, they said.
In Upper France, similar fraud cases involving false job offers have been reported, leading individuals to unknowingly participate in money laundering schemes. With the promise of well-paid work, scammers often require personal information like ID cards or tax numbers, potentially setting up victims for future charges of fraud.
