Police want to ease congestion through border controls

The federal police want to ease the congestion in Frankfurt (Oder) and in the neighboring Polish city of Slubice due to the fixed border controls to curb illegal entries. Mayor René Wilke (Left Party), his Słubice counterpart Mariusz Olejniczak and Police Director Torsten Ebert met on Thursday to discuss how to minimize the impact of border controls on traffic on the freeway in Świecko and on the city bridge between Frankfurt (Oder) and Słubice. This was announced by the city of Frankfurt (Oder). In some cases, there were hours of waiting times and kilometers of traffic jams.

According to the city, visual checks and specific checks of individual vehicles on the city bridge will no longer take place directly on the bridgehead, but on the central reservation. There, traffic can now continue to flow past up to three stopped vehicles and the central reservation can be used for a longer check. In addition, direct communication is to be improved so that countermeasures can be initiated quickly if major traffic jams occur. The Federal Police are very keen to carry out the border controls in Świecko and at the city bridge in such a way that they disrupt traffic as little as possible, said the police director of the Federal Police Inspectorate, Ebert, according to a statement from the city.

Following the introduction of fixed border controls to combat illegal entry, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) in Frankfurt (Oder) complained of considerable disruption to the economy and commuters.

Due to the fixed border controls aimed at curbing illegal migration, traffic congestion has become a significant issue in Frankfurt (Oder) and Slubice. The federal police are working to minimize the impact on traffic, with plans to conduct visual checks and vehicle inspections away from the city bridge to allow traffic to flow more easily.
