Police union disappointed by red-green
According to the Police Union (GdP), the SPD and Green Party's budget plans for 2024 do not take sufficient account of the needs of the police. "It seems as if internal security is not a separate priority for the state government despite the omnipresent social crisis mood," criticized GdP state head Kevin Komolka on Wednesday.
The planned two million euros for equipping police officers with service smartphones is just a drop in the ocean. From the point of view of the GdP, money would also have been needed for a cloud storage facility for evidence, "in the sense of a secure, digital evidence room". The union also sees an urgent need for investment in the police vehicle fleet and is calling for at least 200 additional administrative positions and 50 additional IT specialists.
In contrast, the GdP reacted positively to the red-green government's announcement that it would continue to support the promotion of democracy in the police force with 300,000 euros. "In view of the increasing pressure on democratic societies in the geopolitical situation and the growing success of anti-democratic parties in Germany, it is crucial that the police are strengthened as guardians of democracy," said Komolka.
The Police Union (GdP) expressed their concerns to the Parliament, voicing dissatisfaction with the budget plans presented by the SPD and Green Party, highlighting insufficient consideration for police needs. Despite the Household (nation's) current social crisis mood, internal security seems to lack separate priority for the state government.
