The police officers' union (GdP) in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is urging the Interior Minister, Herbert Reul (CDU), to scrap the "triviality limit" for police and policewomen during the upcoming European Football Championship. Michael Mertens, the head of GdP in NRW, made this request on Sunday, reminding Reul of his promise that overtime worked should not be lost.

This issue dates back to 2000 when a "triviality limit" was implemented for all civil servants in the region. Essentially, it means that only work done after the first five hours is recorded and paid for.

With the European Championship coming up, police officers in NRW will be under immense pressure and will inevitably work extra hours. Mertens believes that Reul could show his appreciation for their hard work by suspending the "triviality limit" for the months of June and July.

This isn't the first time this issue has come up for discussion. Back in February, Mertens requested that the police be permanently exempted from the "triviality limit."
