Police say little about hostage-taker

The Hamburg police initially withheld further information on the 35-year-old hostage-taker from Hamburg Airport on Monday morning. The spokesman was unable to answer the question of whether the man may have worked at the airport and was therefore familiar with the location, citing the ongoing investigation. "Beyond that, I cannot provide any information for police reasons," he continued.

On Saturday evening, the Turkish citizen had broken through a barrier in the area of the north gate at the airport and driven his car onto the airport apron. His four-year-old daughter was in the car. After a war of nerves lasting more than 18 hours, the man surrendered to the police on Sunday afternoon.

According to the police, the Turkish national had abducted his daughter from her mother's apartment in Stade on Saturday and fled with her in a car in the direction of Hamburg. The background is said to have been custody disputes.

Despite the resolution of the hostage situation at Hamburg Airport, air traffic in the area was significantly affected due to the incident. Unfortunate instances of crime, even ones as personal as this, can have far-reaching impacts on public spaces.
