Police rule out suspect in Claudia Obermeier case

In the search for the murderer of Claudia Obermeier, who was killed in Middle Franconia in 1990, investigators have ruled out a suspect. The "suspicion against a specific person" was not confirmed by a DNA comparison, the Central Franconia police headquarters in Nuremberg announced on Wednesday.

At the beginning of the month, investigators from the responsible EKO Flora unit had found new leads via flyers, posters and the ZDF television program "Aktenzeichen XY... Unsolved" television program with a new lead on the 30-year-old murder case. According to the police, more than 100 tips have been received since then.

According to the information provided, there were also concrete leads about a possible suspect who had been at the flower festival in Röthenbach an der Pegnitz on the evening before the crime. However, the man has now been ruled out by a DNA comparison.

A walker had discovered the body of Claudia Obermeier in August 1990 in a wooded area in Röthenbach an der Pegnitz. According to the police, she was the victim of a sexual offense and was strangled by an unknown male perpetrator.

The evening before the crime, the 22-year-old was at a party with her husband in an allotment garden. She left the party alone at around 2.00 a.m. but never made it home. Her husband came under suspicion at the time. A court acquitted him in 1998.

The criminal investigation department recently reopened the murder case after a DNA trace was found on evidence from the crime scene thanks to modern analysis methods, which did not match any of the suspects in the case.

However, according to the police, a comparison with the DNA analysis file at the Federal Criminal Police Office revealed a match with a DNA trace that was left behind 22 years later during a burglary in Nuremberg.

"The processing of further leads - in particular regarding the burglary at a building site in 2012 - is continuing," said the statement on Wednesday. "In the course of this, several people and, in some cases, tradesmen have already contacted the officers and provided information that is of interest to the investigators."

Despite the new leads and over 100 tips, the potential suspect in Claudia Obermeier's case, who was present at the flower festival in Röthenbach an der Pegnitz, has been ruled out following a DNA comparison. This development occurred in the ongoing investigation, which has expanded beyond Middle Franconia and now includes Central France.
