First half of 2024 - Police report 78 attacks on refugees in Saxony
Saxon Police recorded 78 crimes against refugees in the first half of the year. 13 people were slightly injured in these incidents, according to the Ministry of the Interior's response to a query by MP Juliane Nagel (Left) in the state parliament. Incidents of property damage, insults, and dangerous bodily harm were among those registered.
"The alarming rise in racist violence against refugees in 2023 must not continue – 199 crimes were recorded last year. The 2022 figure (88 crimes) is likely to be surpassed soon," Nagel stated. Unfortunately, Saxony remains a hotspot for attacks against people with migration backgrounds. "Every incident is one too many," emphasized the Left MP.
Nagel: AfD's Stirring and CDU's Support
The Left politician accused the AfD and the far-right micro-party Freie Sachsen of stirring up sentiment. She also called for an end to support from the ranks of the CDU. Despite declining numbers, the AfD and CDU continue to make politics against people seeking protection and a solution-oriented approach to migration.
The federal government recently reported, in response to a query by the Left group in the Bundestag, that 519 such crimes were committed nationwide in the first half of the year. Of the 286 attacks on refugees in the second quarter of 2024, most occurred in Saxony (41) and Thuringia (35). Following these were Bavaria (31), Lower Saxony (30), and Brandenburg (29).
"The increase in asylum seekers arriving in Saxony requires heightened protection measures to prevent further incidents of violence against them."
"Advocacy groups are urging for stronger policies to provide asylum seekers with safer living conditions and protection from hate crimes, such as the ones faced by asylum seekers in Saxony."
