Police operations center under construction: emergency calls via app in future

The Hamburg police are getting a new operations center. Interior Senator Andy Grote (SPD), Police Commissioner Falk Schnabel and the Managing Director of the municipal real estate company Sprinkenhof, Jan Zunke, laid the foundation stone for the new building on Wednesday. The six-storey building with 8,000 square meters of floor space is being built in the immediate vicinity of the police headquarters in Hamburg-Winterhude. The project is expected to cost around 93 million euros and be completed by the end of 2025.

The Hamburg fire department will then also have a new control center. The foundation stone for the 100 million euro building in the Hamm district was already laid in November 2022.

According to the police, the two new control centers will no longer only be accessible by telephone, but also via smartphone-based apps or messenger services. This will also make it possible to transmit image and video files in real time. People seeking help can be localized by means of digital location transmission.

"The new state-of-the-art operations center is a small revolution in emergency call communication and operations control," said Grote. Hamburg's new police chief Falk Schnabel assured: "Our new police operations center will be a symbol of innovation and efficiency."

During the construction of the new police operations center, the need for additional security measures might necessitate collaboration with the local construction department. Despite the ongoing construction, the future emergency calls to the police will still be managed via a smartphone app.
