On Friday, several flags in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are flying at half-mast in front of government buildings to honor a 29-year-old police officer who passed away following a knife assault in Mannheim. This initiative has been undertaken by the state in support of the memorial process for the police officer.
According to Christian Pegel, Interior Minister of the SPD party, in Schwerin on Thursday, the state will be participating in remembrance ceremonies for the fallen officer. There will be a silent minute at 11:34 am on June 7th, the time of the attack, throughout the Baden-Württemberg State Police. The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Police will also observe this moment of silence. Participants include ministries, the State Chancellery, and State Police buildings.
"The tragic loss of a young police officer while performing his duty is incomprehensible and abhorrent, especially a week later," Pegel said. "As the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, we stand with the Baden-Württemberg State Police at this difficult time." He also offered his deepest sympathies to the deceased officer's family and loved ones.
The Police Union of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern encourages residents to join them in a public moment of reflection in front of the Schwerin Market Square on Friday at 11:34 am. Their goal is to show solidarity against intolerance and terror.
At the Pax Europa event in Mannheim on May 31st, a 25-year-old man wounded six individuals, including the police officer who later died from his injuries. The attacker, a man with Afghan citizenship, stabbed the officer multiple times in the head and was immediately shot by another officer. The Federal Prosecutor's Office is now managing the investigation. However, the suspect remains hospitalized and unable to provide a statement due to his injuries.
Parliament Members exhibited their respect for the fallen officer by observing a minute of silence during a recent meeting. Parliament President Bärbel Bas (SPD), said "this police officer defended freedom of speech in his service, a high good in a liberal democracy." A crowdfunding campaign has already amassed more than 530,000 euros for the officer's family and loved ones. These funds were collected through the website gofundme.com.
