Judgments - Police officer swept away: Prison sentence for young driver

A 21-year-old man has been sentenced to four years and six months in prison for running over and seriously injuring two police officers with his car during a traffic stop. On Wednesday, the Bielefeld district court sentenced the man to this prison term under juvenile criminal law for attempted murder. The verdict is not yet final. The defense lawyers can apply for a review by the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe.

The lawyers of the 20-year-old at the time of the crime had argued for a suspended sentence in their plea. The prosecution had demanded four years in prison. The court handed down an even higher sentence and assumed that the accused wanted to cover up his drug use with the attempted murder.

The police had stopped the driver one evening in March 2023 in Lübbecke in East Westphalia and noticed the smell of marijuana. He then accelerated. The officers held on to the vehicle, were thrown off and some were seriously injured. One of the police officers suffered abrasions and broken bones, the other a traumatic brain injury.

During the trial, the German denied having consumed drugs. The accusation of attempted murder was therefore false. His buddy had smoked in the vehicle. However, an expert refuted this. The smell in the vehicle had been relatively fresh.
