Due to a shooting incident during a Bundesliga football match between FC Augsburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach about a year ago, a police officer will have to answer charges at the Augsburg Regional Court starting from August 20. The then 27-year-old man is accused of firing a shot from his service weapon without apparent reason in the vicinity of the Augsburg stadium.

Three of the accused's colleagues suffered from acoustic trauma and one police officer was injured by a glass splinter. Additionally, the officers experienced shock. The officer is charged with dangerous bodily harm in office and property damage.

The accused police officer belonged to a special unit of the Bavarian Police. The officers of the so-called support command are deployed, among other things, at major events with a high potential for violence. The police officers were positioned with their service vehicle in the outer area of the stadium to intervene in case of incidents during the match, which ended 4:4. According to the public prosecutor's office, the bullet shattered the window of a service vehicle occupied by four police officers and then hit an empty bus of the Gladbach fan support.
