- Police launch speed control week

In the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, the police started the so-called "Speed Control Week" on Monday. The entire week is dedicated to speed monitoring and there will be enhanced traffic controls, as announced by a spokesperson for the state's interior ministry.

Speed measurements will be conducted at around 120 locations across the state, including mobile and fixed points, and there will be police checkpoints in some areas. Individual police headquarters have the freedom to decide whether they will participate in the Europe-wide action. A balance sheet will be drawn up on Sunday, according to the Rhineland-Palatinate police headquarters.

The aim of the action, according to the police, is to reduce the number of fatalities in traffic accidents. Excessive speed is the main cause of accidents involving personal injury. In 2023, the Rhineland-Palatinate police headquarters reported 2,062 traffic accidents due to inappropriate or excessive speed. In 2022, there were 1,896 such cases.

The enhanced traffic controls during "Speed Control Week" in Rhineland-Palatinate involve scrutiny not just on land but also in the realm of transport and telecommunications, ensuring compliance with speed limits on digital maps and navigation systems. As a result of the action, the police aim to improve overall road safety and possibly address speeding issues in digital transportation services.
