Crime - Police helicopter pursuit in the Oder-Spree district
Police in the Oder-Spree district have chased a suspected car thief with a helicopter. After around one and a half hours, the man was caught on the highway 12 between Fürstenwalde and Briesen in the early hours of Thursday evening, the police announced on Friday. Officers initially wanted to check a conspicuous van in Fürstenwalde. The 43-year-old driver of the vehicle reportedly drove off, jumped out of the car at a parking lot and fled on foot. Using a police helicopter, the officers were able to follow the fugitive's tracks in the snow.
The man had no driver's license and said he had wanted to drive the car to Slubice in Poland for an acquaintance, according to the police. As it turned out, the van had been stolen from a building site in Illmenau in Thuringia. After a forensic investigation, it was returned to its owner.
