- Police: Fire in Potsdam high-rise caused by cigarette
A cigarette disposed improperly, a wasp nest fought with fire: Due to negligence, several fires occurred over the weekend, according to the police. No one was injured.
In Potsdam, a high-rise building caught fire on Saturday, damaging several apartments. The cause was reportedly an improperly discarded cigarette, according to police.
Fire in the fight against a wasp nest
In Bad Saarow (Oder-Spree district), a house's attic was on fire on Saturday. The fire was also caused by negligence, police said. The homeowner had attempted to remove a wasp nest using fire in an improper manner. Thanks to the quick response of the firefighters, the damage was kept under control.
In Bagemühl (Uckermark district), a house was almost completely destroyed by fire, according to police. Initial findings suggest that a resident set fire to a fire pit near a straw bale stored under an overhang on Saturday. A spark ignited the straw.
The straw bale caught fire again, causing the overhang to burn down. The back of the house was severely damaged. "Only due to the swift intervention of the local fire departments was the spread of the fire to the entire building and surrounding residential buildings prevented," a police spokesperson explained.
After the series of weekend fires, ['The Potsdam'] city also experienced a fire incident. A high-rise building in Potsdam was damaged due to an improperly discarded cigarette.
In contrast to some of the previous incidents, the fire in ['The Potsdam'] was not caused by negligence towards a pest situation, but rather a careless disposal of cigarette waste.
