Wiesbaden - Police: Father left child seriously injured after accident
The alleged perpetrator of an accident in Wiesbaden, in which a seriously injured baby was left in the car, is the child's father. As a police spokeswoman explained on Monday, the man appeared at a police station on Saturday morning, several hours after the incident. The 25-year-old now has to answer not only for the accident, but also for failing to render assistance and abandoning a child, it said.
The injured baby is reportedly a six-month-old boy. He is still in hospital with head injuries, said the police spokeswoman. According to the investigation, the child was in a baby car seat on the front passenger seat. However, it was not strapped in.
Passers-by found the seriously injured baby in the abandoned car in the Hessian state capital on Saturday night. At around 2.00 a.m., several witnesses had heard a loud bang. When they went there, they found a car lying on its side. The baby was inside, and first responders attended to him immediately.
After the child's father turned himself in on Saturday morning, a blood sample was taken from him on suspicion of drunk driving, according to the police. It was also suspected that the man had been driving at excessive speed. According to the information provided, the 25-year-old was later able to leave the police station. Criminal proceedings were initiated against him.
Investigators suspect that the man initially hit parked vehicles, a lamppost and boulders next to the road. An expert was on site to reconstruct the exact circumstances of the accident. The police put the damage to property at around 50,000 euros.
