Crime - Police: Drunk driver drives towards officers

A drunk driver is reported to have driven into a police officer in Mittelhessen. The officer had signaled him to stop in the night on Wednesday due to excessive speed. According to the Gießen Police Department, the patrol had just finished another call when they noticed the car in question in Großen-Linden (Gießen district).

A police officer signaled the driver with a light signal to stop. The driver initially slowed down his vehicle. However, according to the current investigation, the 36-year-old driver had suddenly accelerated his vehicle significantly and drove towards the police officer. The officer was able to save himself by jumping to the side. The 45-year-old police officer remained unharmed.

The man fled, but the officers located and arrested him nearby. A breath alcohol test yielded a result of 1.54 Promille. After taking a blood sample at the station, the officers secured the driver's license. He spent the night in a holding cell. However, he was released on order of the prosecutor the next morning due to lack of grounds for detention. The 36-year-old man now faces legal proceedings.

The police are looking for witnesses, especially a man who gave the officers a tip about the license plate number of the fleeing car.
