Police draw mixed conclusions after Lower Saxony derby

After Hannover 96's derby victory over Eintracht Braunschweig, the police have drawn a mixed balance. According to a statement published on Sunday evening, there were no clashes between the rival fan camps. "Nevertheless, the police recorded several injuries, damage to property and endangerment of third parties due to the unauthorized massive burning of pyrotechnics," said the Hanover police after the 2-0 win for 96 in the second division clash.

A police officer was seriously injured during a scuffle in the home area. The nature of the injuries and further personal details were not initially known. The police had previously wanted to control four people who had threatened two bystanders. Afterwards, other fans are said to have shown solidarity with the victims and the altercation ensued. Two stewards were also injured. Several fans also reportedly "attacked" a kiosk in the home area.

During the fan march with 3,500 96 supporters in the morning, pyrotechnics were thrown at police officers and bystanders. According to a statement, at least one police officer was injured by the banging noises. The arrival of the 3,000 guest fans went off without a hitch.

Due to the use of pyrotechnics and the resulting thick clouds of smoke, the match, which is considered one of the most explosive derbies in Germany, was kicked off around five minutes late. Referee Sascha Stegemann interrupted the match twice more because Eintracht supporters were throwing red flares and fireworks towards the pitch.

Visiting fans also dismantled several rows of seats and threw them from the upper tier onto the lower tier. In this context, police officers were repeatedly pelted with metal objects. According to a statement, the police identified one suspect. Both groups of fans returned home peacefully.
