Accident - Police continue to assume car racing after collision on B9

After an accident on Federal Highway 9 with seven injured persons, the police continue to suspect an illegal car race. A spokesperson for the police in Andernach stated this. A car with two children on board had allegedly driven off the B9 near Koblenz, driven over a grass median, and collided with an oncoming car there. In the struck vehicle, four people sustained serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

The 33-year-old driver and his two four and eleven-year-old children had suffered light injuries. According to preliminary investigations, the 33-year-old had reportedly engaged in a race with a third car prior to the accident. The two drivers were supposedly unknown to each other and had spontaneously engaged in a race, the spokesperson said. While the other car had driven off the B9, the 33-year-old had seen a traffic jam ahead of him and swerved to the grass median at high speed. Eventually, his car collided with the oncoming vehicle, in which four passengers were trapped upon impact. The fire department freed them from the car.

The witness video was obtained by the police, allegedly recorded with a so-called Dashcam - a camera mounted in the car that records traffic. The second driver believed to have participated in the race was apprehended by the police following the accident. The driver's licenses and the cars of both drivers were confiscated. Criminal proceedings have been initiated against both men.
