Municipalities - Police chief in favor of gun ban zones

The President of the Central Hesse Police has spoken out in favor of gun ban zones in Giessen and Marburg. "As a society, we have to ask ourselves: Is it necessary to carry a knife in public spaces? That is ultimately for politicians to decide. But we can prove why such zones would make sense in Giessen and Marburg," Torsten Krückemeier told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (Wednesday). "Especially as a knife thrust is often associated with serious injuries and such a weapon is associated with considerable danger for our emergency services."

In his opinion, many citizens feel safer with such a zone. The police have also observed "that the inhibition thresholds for using a knife as a stabbing weapon in certain situations have fallen", said Krückemeier. "If there is a no-knife zone, many people may not even think of taking a knife with them."

A weapons ban zone has been in force in Frankfurt's station district since the beginning of November. Between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., it is forbidden to carry weapons in accordance with the Weapons Act or knives with a fixed or lockable blade longer than four centimetres. Anyone who is nevertheless caught with a weapon must pay at least 500 euros. Every crime that can be prevented and every victim that can be protected is a step in the right direction, explained Frankfurt's Lord Mayor Mike Josef (SPD).

This was the second time such a zone had been introduced in Hesse. A weapons ban zone was already introduced in the state capital of Wiesbaden in 2019.
