Frankfurt - Police begin clearing the occupied Dondorf print shop
The police have begun clearing the squatted former Dondorf printing works in Frankfurt. Police announced on the X platform (formerly Twitter) on Thursday morning that operations were currently underway in connection with the evacuation of the occupied site. According to a spokesperson, there were around 60 to 70 people on the site or in the surrounding area, including around 15 to 20 people on the roof of the former print shop. They would now be asked to come down or leave the premises, the spokesperson said. It was not initially known how many officers were deployed. They had entered the building and were working their way forward, the operation was proceeding peacefully so far, the spokesperson said.
The collective had previously rejected a call by Goethe University to voluntarily evacuate the site. The university had asked the collective to leave the building by Wednesday afternoon. In the event of a voluntary eviction, it had promised to withdraw its criminal complaint and to initiate talks on the preservation of the property and the creation of new premises. However, the collective had emphasized that it rejected these "unclear promises". They will remain in the building until further notice, a spokesperson said. Both sides emphasized that they were still willing to talk.
The activists had occupied the former Dondorf printing works in Frankfurt's Bockenheim district for the second time this year since last weekend. The building was occupied for the first time in the summer. "We continue to fight for the preservation of the building and its use as a cultural center for urban society - for a city by everyone for everyone," they declared. Eight police officers and several demonstrators were injured during the eviction in the summer. The university is the landlord of the building, which belongs to the state of Hesse.
